Worth it? – The Equalizer

“What is the point of opening a generic, action-driven, male-revenge fantasy film with a quote from Mark Twain?” –The Eclectic Eccentric Unless of course, you intended for every reviewer to give you one strike right off the bat. Maybe the director likes living on the wild side or maybe he just takes himself and his work way too seriously. I suppose that’s just one of the many questions I’ll have to answer today as I decide if The Equalizer starring Denzel Washington is Worth It? Let’s get one thing out of the way from the get-go, this movie features one…

Worth It?- Burnt

I have a confession to make. I heart Bradley Cooper. Like really heart him. It’s as if his charm reaches out and chokes me until I succumb to a dark slumber filled with dreams of winning smiles and brash one-liners. The man once made a movie about a gun-wielding raccoon an international blockbuster okay? There is no denying his allure. And when I first saw the trailer for Burnt I was genuinely excited to see charmingly brash Bradley Cooper play a recovering addict chef trying to put his life back together. A great casting choice coupled with what looked to…

Worth It?-John Wick

Let me start by telling you that John Wick is a testosterone-infused masturbatory male fantasy on cocaine and that its plot makes very little sense. Let me also tell you that it is an hour and forty minutes of unadulterated fun and I will not apologize for enjoying it. I know, I know I’m getting ahead of myself. This is Worth It? after all. I’m supposed to hem and haw and give you things that I liked and didn’t like before stunning you with a recommendation to see or not see a film. But that would require me to craft…

Worth it?- The Intern

In this edition of Worth It? I take a look at a quiet comedy called The Intern starring Robert De Niro and Ann Hathaway. The story follows 70-year-old widower De Niro as he goes to work as a “senior” intern for Hathaway’s incredibly successful internet startup which is beginning to feel growing pains. The through-line of the story revolves around whether or not Hathaway should bring in an outside CEO to help her run her company. Robert De Niro has hit that point in his career where he can take on all those quirky old man roles that don’t really…

Worth It?- Hercules

In the summer of 2014, we were treated to not one but two Hercules movies. The Legend of Hercules, which I haven’t seen but I assume should never be watched by anyone, lest we end up with an Ark of the Covenant situation, and Brett Ratner’s Hercules (2014), which can’t possibly be worse than the first one. Now normally I’m a big fan of avoiding anything involving Ratner (the first Rush hour being the exception) but this film also happens to involve that exploding supernova of charisma that is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as well as master thespians Ian McShane…

Worth It?- Lucy

Luc Besson. Check. Morgan Freeman. Check. Scarlett Johansson. Check. Really if you want me to see a movie any one of these names is enough to get me interested. Put all three together and I can guarantee you that I will see it at some point. So when Lucy came out to mixed reviews I was more than a little perplexed. Given that I had a lot of other things going on at the time I decided to wait to pick up the film on DVD to check it out. Which makes it a perfect film for this month’s edition…

Worth It? – Kingsman: the Secret Service

Avid comic book fan that I am Mark Millar’s body of work is well known to me. His run at Marvel included work on The Ultimates, Ultimate Fantastic Four, and the Civil War comic event. All of which are some of my absolute favorites. I also very much enjoyed his creator owned titles Kick-Ass and Wanted. So I have to admit that I’m a bit ashamed that I didn’t realize Kingsman: The Secret Service was based on one of his books until it was already out of theaters. Now just because a movie is based on a Millar comic doesn’t…

Worth It?- Robocop (2014)

In today’s installment of Worth It? I venture into the world of science fiction to check out the recent remake of cult classic Robocop. This 2014 film was supposed to be the start of a new franchise but with a mediocre box office and less than favorable critical reviews it looks like those plans have been scrapped. Despite all that the new Robocop does have its fans and a pretty talented cast that includes Michael Keaton, Gary Oldman, and Michael K. Williams so I figured I’d give it a go. To be honest I was pleasantly surprised to find out the…

Worth It?- Horns

Can Harry Potter pull off an American accent? If you play David Bowie backwards can you hear the Devil speak to you? Is being friend-zoned a special kind of hell? These questions and more will be answered in this edition of Worth It? when we check out the trippy 2014 horror/crime film Horns staring Daniel Radcliffe. Radcliffe plays Ig, a radio DJ who has been accused of raping then murdering his longtime girlfriend. The movie begins with a shot of the couple happy together in the woods than transitions to Ig waking up on his kitchen floor from a bender.…

Worth it?- Cuban Fury

So the last couple of films we looked at in Worth It? were American films that fell rather short in the laughs department and I know no better way to rectify that than to go across the pond to our British brethren. When StudioCanal and Film 4 get together I’m rarely disappointed and when I came across Cuban Fury I just had to check it out. Nick Frost, Chris O’Dowd, Rashida Jones, and Ian McShane together in a movie about competitive Salsa dancing? If that sentence doesn’t get you excited then you’re reading the wrong blog. And boy did my…
