The Eclectic Eccentric’s Guide to Binging Through the Apocalypse: Feel Good Films

It can be hard these days to keep your spirits up. But these “proven to make you believe in humanity again” films can help. Here’s a list of some of my favorite feel-good movies.

  • My Big Fat Greek Wedding– This movie was all anyone could talk about when it came out, but over the years I think it’s faded from the zeitgeist a little which is a shame because it is a brilliantly crafted film. True love, crazy in-laws, learning how to love yourself. This will definitely take your mind off your troubles.
  • Babe- The pig is freaking adorable. Just be sure the tissues are ready for all your happy tears.
  • Mr. Smith Goes to Washington– Have you stopped watching the news for fear of your head literally exploding? Do you want to believe in a noble public servant again? This Jimmy Stewart classic will have you remembering that there are good people in this world and that they are worth fighting for, no matter how futile that fight may seem.
  • Singing in the Rain- I can’t tell you how many people over the years have told me that this is their feeling sick/rainy day film. This classic Hollywood studio musical has comedy, romance, and more than a few all-time classic numbers.
  • School of Rock– Jack Black teaching a bunch of kids to accept and believe in themselves all while they melt your face with their epic rock. This will have you smiling and singing along in no time.
  • What’s Up Doc- A 70’s update of the screwball comedy with Barbara Streisand and Ryan O’Neal. Oh, and you’ll find Madeline Kahn here being her usual fantastic self.
  • August Rush– The music is amazing, the story is heartwarming, and the finale will send your heart soaring.
  • Breakfast at Tiffany’s– My favorite movie ever. Audrey Hepburn’s performance here defies description. This is for when you need to remember what it’s like to love and be loved.
  • Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium- The keyword in the title is ‘Wonder’. Because no matter how old you get or what responsibilities you have you should always make sure to keep your sense of wonder. And if you ever lose it, this film will help you get it back.
  • The Way- Emilio Estevez directs his father Martin Sheen in a film about a father deciding to finish his son’s pilgrimage after his son dies while on his journey. A very personal and very profound film.
