The Eclectic Eccentric’s Guide to Binging Through the Apocalypse: Supernatural Series

Vampires, werewolves, ghouls, demons, and just some plain weird unexplainable shit. If you are in the mood for one, two, or all of these then this is the list for you.

  • Chilling Adventures of Sabrina– Originally developed for the CW it has some of that teenage angst in its DNA that can get distracting. But the gothic aesthetic, the likable leads, sensual energy, and intersectional feminism make this a guilty pleasure series that you’re sure to fly right through its four seasons.
  • Buffy The Vampire Slayer- Feminist icon to millennial women everywhere, Buffy Summers is proof you can slay your demons and still make it to homeroom on time. Full of biting one-liners and tragic loss, this is a coming of age story that doesn’t pull its punches. Not every episode is a winner, but there are four or five episodes in this series that could easily be in the conversation for the best episode of television ever.
  • Being Human- It’s two for the price of one with this recommendation as both the U.K. and U.S. versions are worth a watch. What happens when a werewolf, a vampire, and a ghost decide to be housemates? DRAMA! The series are different enough that you won’t feel like you’re watching the same show twice but just the same I wouldn’t recommend watching them back to back. For when you want your 20-something angst doused in blood and insatiable supernatural hunger.
  • Penny Dreadful– Some network exec said let’s take all the public domain horror stories from the 19th century, throw them together, and see what we get. And the answer is a pulp thriller that is better than it has any right to be. Creepy and full of that dark sensuality that keeps you coming back. For all the gothic fiction fans out there.
  • Dead Like Me- One of Bryan Fuller’s earliest series. A young woman dies and becomes a grim reaper. The show is darkly funny and deals heavily in themes of death and grief. One of those forgotten gems that doesn’t get enough love.
  • Wynonna Earp- Pulpy goodness. Basically, Wyatt Earp’s descendant sends souls back to hell using a magic revolver. Oh, and Doc Holiday is immortal for some reason. It’s not a good show but it is a guilty pleasure. You’re locked inside with nothing to do. Now is the time for guilty pleasures.
  • Lost Girl: The series follows a bisexual succubus as she navigates the politics of the Fae. Do you really need to know more?
  • Good Omens: It’s a limited series so more like a day’s binge than a week’s. Adapted from Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s novel about the End of Days its really just a buddy comedy featuring Michael Sheen and David Tennant as an Angel and a Demon.
  • What We Do in Shadows- This comedy series based on the hit movies continues to reinforce one of life’s immutable truths: Vampires make for shitty housemates.
  • Twin Peaks– Forget “Who Killed Laura Palmer?” the bigger question is “WTF is happening right now?”. One of the weirdest and most offbeat shows ever made. David Lynch at his finest. Honestly, how have you not already watched this?
