People have always been obsessed with con artists, long before Clooney and Pitt came along to suave up our movie screens. Personally, I think it’s the human need to be in the know and to feel smarter than the poor saps who fall for the games that get run on them. But you’re not here for pop psychology, you’re here for the cons. Leverage- “Sometimes the bad guys are the good guys” Basically a bunch of thieves play Robin Hood by taking down a new soulless corporate suit/one-percenter every episode and making restitution to their victims. Fun and Funny. This…

The Eclectic Eccentric’s guide to binging through the Apocalypse- Crime Comics
Not all comics are about superheroes. In fact, in the early days of the medium westerns and crime fiction were the predominant story genres. In honor of that long lineage here are some great crime comics for you to sink your teeth into. Criminal– An anthology series written by Ed Brubaker with each arc featuring a new self-contained story. Brubaker goes out of his way to subvert the expectations of the genre while still adhering to its conventions. A compelling read. Sin City– Frank Miller’s classic black and white noir series of stories that spawned two feature films. Gritty, fun,…
The Eclectic Eccentric’s guide to binging through the Apocalypse- Hard-Boiled Detective Fiction
Sometimes you want a brilliant detective with complex mysteries, and sometimes you want a blue collar, grind-it-out, in-over-his-head, stubborn son-of-a-bitch with a revolver in his pocket a weakness for leggy dames. If you’re in the mood for the latter, then today’s list is for you. The Maltese Falcon- A classic from one of the masters of the genre; Dashiell Hammett. Even if you’ve seen the movie adaptation you owe it to yourself to go back and read this novel. The Black Dahlia– The first in James Elroy’s L.A. Quartet series about L.A. in the 40s/50s. Elroy mixes fact and fiction…
The Eclectic Eccentric’s Guide to Binging Through the Apocalypse: Spy Movies
“Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.” And boy have I got some tangled webs for you. I love a good spy movie and I’ve rounded up some of my favorite double, triple, even quadruple agents for you to enjoy. After all its not paranoia if they’re really out to get you. No Way Out– Gene Hackman and Kevin Costner play an amazing game of cat-and-mouse in this oft-overlooked thriller involving an affair, a murder, the Pentagon, and a soviet spy. Anything else and I’ll be spoiling it for you. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy-…

The Eclectic Eccentric’s Guide to Binging Through the Apocalypse: Wonder Woman Arcs
Wonder Woman is one of those characters that often are better in theory than execution. A powerful woman warrior, who fights monsters and misogyny, is a great role model for women (and men) everywhere. But unfortunately, there are far less epic Wonder Woman stories than there should be because she’s been subject to writers who didn’t have a clear idea of what to do with her. But when some one gets the character right, they can really knock it out of the park. Here are ten great Wonder Woman stories for you to check out. A League of One- Technically…
The Eclectic Eccentric’s guide to binging through the Apocalypse- Hard Sci-Fi Novels
There are many subgenres of Science Fiction but for some hardcore nerds, they only want to read sci-fi that has been heavily researched and stays close to reality. I’m a bit more expansive in my tastes but I do love and admire authors who take the time to really think the science part of science fiction through. So here are ten novels that do exactly that. The Martian-One of the most thoroughly researched novels ever written. The story is simple yet compelling. But it’s the science that makes this one a must-read for nerds everywhere. Leviathan Wakes- The first in…
The Eclectic Eccentric’s Guide to Binging Through the Apocalypse: Feel Good Films
It can be hard these days to keep your spirits up. But these “proven to make you believe in humanity again” films can help. Here’s a list of some of my favorite feel-good movies. My Big Fat Greek Wedding– This movie was all anyone could talk about when it came out, but over the years I think it’s faded from the zeitgeist a little which is a shame because it is a brilliantly crafted film. True love, crazy in-laws, learning how to love yourself. This will definitely take your mind off your troubles. Babe- The pig is freaking adorable. Just…

The Eclectic Eccentric’s Guide to Binging Through the Apocalypse: Supernatural Case-of-the-Week Series.
Today’s list is combining two types of supernatural subgenres the case-of-the-week and the monster-of-the-week. The formats are pretty identical. The important thing is that the episode’s primary plot is wrapped up by the end of the episode and there are supernatural elements involved. So get to binging you ghouls. Supernatural– I’m not nearly as in love with this series as others. But it’s pretty good, gets better with each season, and if you need something to binge there are over three hundred episodes here to keep you occupied. And who knows, maybe you’ll become one of those hardcore SPN fans…
