Today’s list is combining two types of supernatural subgenres the case-of-the-week and the monster-of-the-week. The formats are pretty identical. The important thing is that the episode’s primary plot is wrapped up by the end of the episode and there are supernatural elements involved. So get to binging you ghouls.
- Supernatural– I’m not nearly as in love with this series as others. But it’s pretty good, gets better with each season, and if you need something to binge there are over three hundred episodes here to keep you occupied. And who knows, maybe you’ll become one of those hardcore SPN fans I see all over twitter.
- Lucifer– This show is nothing like its comic book source material, but that’s okay. Your basic odd couple detective show but in this case, one of the detectives is Lucifer, the actual devil. Wickedly charming with a cast that oozes charisma. You’ll be hooked after a few episodes.
- Pushing Daisies– One of the most visually impressive series ever made. Man, those colors just pop. It also has one of the more peculiar premises I’ve ever seen. This show is quirky and delightful and an under-the-radar cult classic.
- Haven- In terms of the overarching plot, you couldn’t always tell where the writers were going and honestly, I’m not sure they really knew themselves. But the week to week cases are excellent and the cast is really enjoyable to watch.
- The Dresden Files– This ill-fated series was before its time and cut down to soon. But the one season was charming and cool and had some really good episodes. For when you’ve run out of longer shows to watch.
- Angel- This Buffy spin-off is every bit as good as its progenitor even if its town is almost entirely different. While there are still quips aplenty, this show is much more noir and has a higher mortality rate amongst the main characters. Even if Buffy wasn’t for you, you should give this one a shot.
- iZombie– From the creator of Veronica Mars comes this story about a zombie who works as a medical examiner to steal brains. Turns out when she eats brains, she gets visions that help her solve murders. It’s funny, with a great ensemble and some really solid world-building.
- Kolchak: The Night Stalker– Twenty years before Mulder and Scully there was Kolchak. Just replace aliens with vampires and FBI agents with reporter and basically, you’ve got the same show. Insanely popular in its day and worth a look if you feel like going ‘70s retro.
- Reaper– Ray Wise as The Devil. Also famed character actress Margo Martindale. That’s it. That’s all you need to know.
- Grimm– The cases-of-the-week can be a bit hit and miss and the overarching plots can occasionally have you scratching your head. But the characters are so damn likable you’ll forgive all that. Don’t think too hard about the particulars just sit back and enjoy.
